| The offence of counterfeiting of Governments stamps is
punishable with imprisonment for life or imprisonment for 10 years and fine.The possession
of counterfeited Government stamps or instruments to counterfeit Goverment stamps and sale
of Counterfeit stamps are all punishable with imprisonment for 7 years and fine. |
| In the year 1997 in Madikeri district a gang dealing with
Counterfeited Government stamps was caught. The case is under investigation with COD.
Subsequent to thatthe Cubbon Park Police detected another case in august 1998. Earlier
this year one more case was detected by CCB of Bangalore City Police. |
| On incredible information ACP Chickpet and staff raided a
house in R.T. Nagar and another in Vasantnagar on the night of 19.8.2000 and found huge
quantity of Government stamps and related material, the value of which of which is over
Rs.9 crores. A cash of Rs.34 lakhs was also seized from the house at R.T.Nagar.
Further, during the course of the investigation 11 two wheelers used for distribution of
counterfeited material were seized. So far 10 accused have been arrested. |
| This particular detection has unearthed a huge racket in
printing and circulation of counterfeit stamp papers having interstate ramification which
needs to be further probed. |
